Jabulani turned 1 in March 2006.  His father is dead, presumably from AIDS.  His very ill mother left him as a newborn at the father's homestead with an aging great-aunt and an uncle.  As there was no money to buy formula, they fed him only thin porridge made from cornmeal and water.  At 4 months he was brought to the nutrition clinic that Robin Pratt runs in Emkhuzweni.  The aunt was given formula and eventually his condition improved but it was clear that there was no bonding at all between baby and aunt.  Greatly concerned for the child's safety and wellbeing, Robin asked the aunt if she wanted to keep the baby.  If yes, the aunt would receive more formula.  If not, SLC would gladly take him.  Neither the great-aunt or uncle wanted the responsibility of raising an infant.  Permission was granted and Jabulani was taken to SLC.  He is still small for his age due to early malnutrition, but he has improved tremendously in health and strength.
